Weaving the Masses

Gondanglegi’s creative activities, from costume making and craft to batik, have long developed across homes and informal workshops, yet remain fragmented without a shared place to learn, produce, and present collectively.

Guided by Contextual Architecture and the concept of Interwoven Growth, the project reimagines creativity as a continuous and interconnected process. Local and digital production are brought together through a Digital Value Added Process, allowing a handmade piece to evolve from workshop production into photography, branding, digital publication, exhibition, and retail.

This interconnected workflow is translated into the architecture itself. Rather than forming a single monolithic volume, the building is composed as a cluster of masses linked by bridges, open corridors, and shared spaces. Inspired by Gondanglegi’s culture of srawung and gotong royong, circulation becomes more than movement between functions. It becomes an opportunity for encounter, exchange, and spontaneous collaboration.

A Network of Creative Spaces

The spatial arrangement follows the creative journey from making to processing, presenting, and engaging. Each cluster accommodates a distinct stage of production while remaining visually and physically connected to the others.

This network allows creative activities to overlap rather than operate in isolation, creating opportunities for makers, visitors, and communities to encounter one another throughout the building.

Designed for Interaction

The spaces are intentionally shaped to encourage visibility, accessibility, and informal encounters. Bridges, open corridors, and shared nodes become social thresholds where people can pause, observe ongoing work, exchange ideas, or simply srawung.

Through this approach, circulation is transformed from a functional necessity into an active part of the creative environment, connecting people, processes, and ideas within a continuously evolving network.
